How to choose and use your insurance

  1. Decide what insurance you need

Travel insurance pays for emergency care: an injury, a sudden illness, a hospital stay. It does not cover GP visits, tests or planned operations, and the UK Foreign Office warns that such policies are not designed for living abroad permanently. If you live in Georgia and see doctors, you need an annual plan from a Georgian insurer: appointments, tests, medicines, hospital care. Do not cancel your travel policy until the waiting period for emergency hospitalisation on your new plan has ended: 3 months at IRAO, 15 days at Unison.

  2. Compare plans on four points

Look at the price for your age, the share of medicine costs covered, dental care and the waiting period. For example, IRAO Pulse Standard in September 2026: 80 ₾ a month for ages 21–40; medicines are covered at 45–55%, up to 1,000 ₾; planned dental care at 50%, also up to 1,000 ₾. The cheapest package is GPI Medi Standard at 39 ₾ a month; Unison and ARDI start at 49 ₾.

  3. Choose a scheme: referral or free choice

With a referral package, you first see the insurer's family doctor, who then refers you to a specialist. These packages are cheaper: by 10–15 ₾ a month at IRAO and by 10–20 ₾ at ARDI. With free choice, you can go to any licensed clinic, but the insurer pays a smaller share: under IRAO Standard+, it pays 40% of outpatient care.

  4. Check the waiting periods and exclusions

Planned treatment is not covered from day one. At IRAO, emergency hospitalisation is covered after 3 months, chronic conditions after 6, and planned hospitalisation, cancer treatment and childbirth after 12. At GPI Exclusive, planned operations are covered after 12 months, and pregnancy and childbirth after 24 months. ARDI's policy terms exclude congenital conditions, as well as diabetes and chronic hepatitis except in emergencies.

  5. Ask whether they will sell a policy to a foreigner

Insurers rarely publish separate rules for foreigners on their websites, and ARDI's Vitamin leaflets are headed "for citizens of Georgia under 70". Before you pay, ask whether you need a residence permit or a Georgian bank account, and up to what age the plan is sold.

  6. Check the insurer's licence

As of 27 August 2026, Georgia has 19 licensed insurers. The Insurance State Supervision Service publishes the list with licence numbers on insurance.gov.ge, in the "მზღვეველები" ("Insurers") section; the page is in Georgian. Check the insurer's name and licence number against your policy.

  7. Understand how you pay at the doctor's

At a partner clinic, the insurer pays its share straight away and you pay the rest. At any other clinic, you pay the full amount and then claim it back: within 60 days at IRAO, within 30 days at Unison and ARDI. You need the receipt and medical form IV-100/a from the doctor. Before a planned hospital stay, get a guarantee letter: at IRAO, you submit the documents 5 working days in advance. With Unison, you must report an emergency hospitalisation within 24 hours on 032 2 991 991, or the costs may not be reimbursed.

State programmes for people living in Georgia permanently

Resolution No. 655 opens some programmes not only to citizens but also to people who live in Georgia permanently: pregnancy care, HIV medicines, safe blood. The Ministry of Health has not clarified whether this includes holders of a temporary residence permit. Ask a clinic that works under the programme.

FAQ · 6

Can I get free medical treatment in Georgia if I have a residence permit?

No. The universal state programme is for citizens of Georgia, people with stateless status, refugees, people with supplementary protection and registered asylum seekers. According to the UK Foreign Office, foreigners cannot register with the state healthcare system. The only thing free for everyone is the ambulance via 112.

How much does health insurance in Georgia cost per month?

Annual health insurance from Georgian insurers costs 39 to 185 ₾ a month, depending on the package and your age (GPI, Unison, ARDI, IRAO, September 2026).

Does health insurance in Georgia cover chronic conditions?

Usually not straight away: they are covered after a waiting period, and some are excluded altogether. IRAO covers chronic conditions after 6 months; ARDI's policy terms exclude diabetes and chronic hepatitis except in emergencies.

Will travel insurance bought in my home country do if I live in Georgia?

For entry, yes, if the policy meets the requirements: medical and accident cover of at least 30,000 ₾ for your whole stay, in English or Georgian. For living here, no: a travel policy only pays for emergency care, not doctor's appointments or planned treatment.

Are there age limits?

Yes. IRAO publishes prices up to age 66, and ARDI sells its Vitamin plans up to age 70. If you are older, ask the insurer directly.

Do insurers have apps?

Yes: IRAO, MyGPI (MyGPIH in the App Store), Unison Insurance Mobile, ARDI App and Imedi L. In the IRAO app you can send your doctor's form IV-100 and get an electronic referral 1 working day before the visit.
